Goal setting can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to our health and fitness.
We have all used the text book answers once or twice: to be healthy, to go to the gym consistently, to get more sleep, to eat clean, etc.
So, how do we narrow those down to attainable goals that we can actually track?
We make S.M.A.R.T goals!
The acronym S.M.A.R.T takes a very broad goal and allows you to really dig in and make attainable and trackable goals.
Grab a sheet of paper and write down the first goal that comes to mind. Go through the steps of S.M.A.R.T goal setting with me and you will be surprised at what you end up with.
The more specific your description, the bigger the chance that you’ll get exactly that.
What exactly do you want to achieve? Really dig deep with this one
Where will the actions to complete this goal take place?
How are you going to make it happen?
When? What is the timeline for this goal?
With whom? Is there anyone that is involved? Accountability?
What are the conditions and limitations?
Why exactly do I want to reach this goal?
What will reaching this goal mean to you?
Making a goal measurable can go a long way in refining what exactly it is that you want.
Measurable goals mean that you identify exactly what it is you will see, hear and feel when you reach your goal. Saying that you are happier isn’t how you measure that you lost 2 pants sizes. Being able to buy a size 10 and wear those pants comfortably is.
Is the goal something you can actually make happen? Its okay if you say no. I am sure many of us would if we went through this checklist. So, how can you make it attainable?
It might mean that instead of saying you want to lose 50 pounds in 4 weeks, you bring that number down to something you can confidently say you can and will achieve.
Is this goal even relevant to you? Do you even want to run a marathon, get that promotion or be famous?
You would be surprised at how often we write down a goal because it’s the new in thing right now or peer pressure. But if you really stop and think about it, it has absolutely nothing to do with what you even want.
Time is money! Make a plan for everything you do.
