Life can get incredibly busy. You may work 40 hours a week, take care of kids, or have other commitments that take time out of your day. When life gets busy, oftentimes our fitness falls. While going to the gym for some strength training 2-3 times per week is a great start, it is important that we make small everyday changes to life that can make us more fitness-focused.
Small changes and short bits of exercise can make a huge difference to our overall health. Finding small spurts of 5-10 minutes throughout your day can add up to many health benefits in the long run. Here are 4 things you can add to your daily routine to give you a more fitness-focused life.
1. Develop a morning routine to get your day started on the right foot.
Sometime in the morning close to when you wake up get moving. Whether it’s a 10-minute walk or a series of active stretches, this can drastically improve how you feel throughout the day. Waking up and doing some high knees, hip circles, cat-cow, and toe touches for 5 minutes can get the blood flowing and help joints feel better throughout the day.
2. Park farther away everywhere you go.
Most of us are going to find the closest parking spot we can. Parking farther away can add a couple of minutes of walking to your day and add up to a lot of steps throughout the week. With all the sitting we do throughout the day a couple of minutes more of walking can improve
health.
3. Use the 50/10 sitting to standing rule.
For every 50 minutes, you spend sitting, it’s important to stand up and do something active for at least 10 minutes. When we sit for too long our body starts to tighten up in those positions. So when you stand and your hip flexors or hamstrings are tight it can lead to a spine that’s not in proper alignment causing back pain. Getting up and standing, walking, or stretching can undo some of the tightness you get from sitting.
4. Sleep at least 7 hours every night.
Everyone knows that we need to sleep, but we don’t take it nearly as seriously as we should. It is reported that with a lack of sleep a person will consume 300-500 extra calories, and burn an average of 300-400 fewer calories. When we are tired our body doesn’t want to move, and it thinks it needs more food to make up lack of energy. Getting adequate sleep can help with weight control, and moving more throughout the day.
