It’s April! While some of us may be thinking about and looking forward to Easter, spring cleaning or spring break, it is also a great time to remember that April is Stress Awareness Month! Everyone you know has dealt with stress in one way or another. You may be dealing with stress right now as you read this. Stress interferes with our daily life and may cause headaches, fatigue, frustration and even muscle tension. Untreated stress over long periods of time can often lead to serious health issues such as heart disease. It may seem impossible in the moment when we are dealing with so much stress to ever recover. Yet stress relief is very possible. Here are some of my personal favorite ways to relieve stress:
Exercise - Don’t get turned away just yet! Exercise can mean something as simple as taking a walk around the block. Not to mention the fresh air you receive when going out for a walk.
Meditation - There are an abundance of guided meditations to follow all over the internet. Pick one that stands out to you and enjoy. Sometimes I like to even just turn off all the lights in my room, light a candle and just practice breathing. Focusing on your breathing in complete silence and no distractions can do wonders.
Hobbies - Find a hobby you enjoy! I love to read, especially before bed, it helps me relax so I get a good night’s sleep. I have also picked up crocheting! It helps keep your hands and mind busy. Any hobby can become a great way to unwind after a long and stressful day.
If you want to go the extra mile to reduce stress in your day to day life, fixing your sleeping schedule and your diet are crucial! Reduce your screen time and increase your sleep time. Ditch the coffee and trade it in for some water. Don’t underestimate your veggies! They contain vitamins and minerals that neutralize harmful chemicals when you're under stress. Lastly, eating regularly and not missing meals is very important to keeping your body stable when you are faced with stress.
