Can you believe how fast this summer is flying by? We know how easy it is to get caught up in the busy summer schedule, but August is officially Family Fun Month– the perfect excuse to hit pause, get outside, and move together as a family!
Fitness doesn’t just happen in the gym; it happens when we’re out living life. Moving as a family builds great, lifelong habits for the kids and keeps you energized. Here are a few fun ways to take your workout into the wild this month:
🥾 Hit the Local Trails
Keep it easy, scenic, and fun for all ages! Walking and light hiking are incredible ways to build endurance without feeling like you’re “working out.”
- Gum Grove Park: Right here in Seal Beach! Enjoy a shady, serene 1.4-mile stroll through the eucalyptus trees. It’s a great spot to bring the family dog, too.
- Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve: Located in Huntington Beach, these flat, coastal trails are fantastic for spotting wildlife. Kids will love looking for herons, egrets, and fish jumping in the water.
- El Dorado Nature Center: Head next door to Long Beach for an easy 1- or 2-mile dirt trail loop around the lakes. It feels like a true nature escape right in the middle of the city.
🚲 Cruise the Coast (Safely!)
Dust off the bikes, rollerblades, or skateboards! The ocean breeze makes the miles fly by.
- Huntington Beach Bike Trail: Take a beautiful, flat ride down the coast. You can start near Bolsa Chica and ride for miles with the ocean right next to you.
- San Gabriel River Path: Another fantastic, paved option that gives you plenty of space to cruise without worrying about car traffic.
Safety First: Before you hit the pavement, do a quick gear check! Make sure everyone is wearing proper protective gear, especially helmets for biking, skateboarding, and rollerblading. A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable for a safe, fun ride!
🏐 Beach Games & Active Picnics
You don’t have to be a pro to have fun in the sand. Grab a volleyball, head down to the courts near the Seal Beach pier, and get ready for a serious leg workout disguised as playtime.
If you want a more relaxed afternoon, pack a cooler with your favorite healthy snacks, grab a frisbee or a soccer ball, and set up camp at a local park or the beach. Eat, play, and repeat!
Active Picnics: Pack a cooler with your favorite healthy snacks, grab a frisbee or a soccer ball, and set up camp at a local park or the beach. Eat, play, and repeat!
💧 Hydration Check
Summer days in Southern California can get toasty. Make sure you are packing plenty of water and enforcing mandatory water breaks—especially for the kids! When you’re having fun in the sun, it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated, so keep those water bottles full and easily accessible.
