As 2023 creeps up quickly, many people will begin to think of how to start the New Year off right. If you’re anything like myself, 2020-2022 has been a whirlwind roller coaster and keeping up with time, health, workouts, schedules, family, and just life in general has been quite the challenge! Even though I don’t really love New Year resolutions because most aim for only a short term goal, they do provide an opportunity to instill a goal or a focus, so that is what the New Year can bring!
One goal that I used to achieve so well for so many years (the reason I became a fitness instructor) is simply a self Care routine. Working out, meditating, taking time for myself, reading, and healing holistic therapies such as sauna or massage. If you’re wanting to put yourself first after many years of putting others or other priorities first, this is the year to slow down and focus on the most important person- YOU. Self care seems daunting or a waste of time, but really it is an act of intention that focuses on putting you first before anyone else.
Self Care is very much like working out or perfecting a skill and it absolutely varies for everyone. What you may choose for yourself can look very different from what I would choose, but nonetheless, it’s the routine of the act that creates the lifestyle and changes for the better. As an example, my self care routine will vary each day but typically involves a cup of warm lemon water in the morning with a few minutes sitting alone with my eyes closed. I try not to think or do anything- just sit. This is my meditation. Another day I may go for an hour walk with a friend and simply talk. Most days I also try to schedule a workout, a healthy meal, and once or twice a month a massage or acupuncture to keep my nervous system calm.
Whatever your intention for the year may be, consider creating that intention to develop into a lifestyle choice or long term goal that you can build off to create a healthier and happier you! It also helps when you can choose these intentions with a wonderful support and community which I seek at Beach Fitness! Nothing inspires me more than to surround myself with smart, motivated, and positive other like minded people who also want to better themselves. Please reach out to our team if you would like to do the same. Happy New Year!
